EXCERPT

ACT I, Scene 1

(Lightning. ESTHER is holding a handful of sand. A rope is hanging nearby. Three men are closing in on her. She sees the men, pauses and then releases the sand. Darkness. The sound of rain.)

ACT I, Scene 2

(The rain fades. Two of the men depart. A prison cell. There is a bright yellow light shining in through the window. The rope remains in view. JEB is watching ESTHER.)

ESTHER
When?

JEB
Soon.

ESTHER
You?

JEB
Why not guard?

ESTHER
Why not ghost?

JEB
Why not.

ESTHER
I’m not afraid.

JEB
That’s what they all say.

ESTHER
That’s what I say.

JEB
Apparently.

ESTHER
So there’s no hope.

JEB
No.

ESTHER
Then why are you here?

JEB
To prevent you from taking a liberty.

ESTHER
But allow you to take one.

JEB
Not a worry.

ESTHER
You shouldn’t think I’m innocent. When I was nine, a woman took me
aside to teach me. I know all about the physical acts of love.

JEB
Knock yourself out.
